Town Hall goes purple for World Autism Awareness Week

It’s World Autism Awareness Week!

World Autism Awareness Week (29th March – 4th April) raises awareness about people with autistic spectrum disorders including autism and Asperger syndrome throughout the world.

Hereford Town Hall has been illuminated in purple to highlight this global occasion, and on the evening of 2nd April (National Autism Awareness Day) Mayor of Hereford Kath Hey was joined by Councillor Cat Hornsey and Debbie Hobbs of the National Autistic Society Herefordshire Branch to give an important message about Autism and how we can help the cause of those on the autistic spectrum.

Hereford City Council are proud to have support the National Autistic Society Herefordshire Branch and their fantastic work. Through our grants, the City Council have been able to provide a sensory bus, giving viewers an small insight into what might be seen through the eyes of an autistic person.

Almost everyone has heard of autism. But far too few people know what it’s actually like to be autistic – both the strengths and how hard life can be at times. The National Autistic Society continue to hear from autistic people who routinely feel misunderstood, are struggling without the right support or even feel judged and mocked.

The coronavirus pandemic has been particularly tough for many autistic people and their families. Services have closed and many people have been left stranded. The ever-changing guidelines and restrictions can be confusing to understand and extremely difficult to implement for autistic people with high support needs.

Thanks to their supporters, NAS have been able to campaign to ensure autistic people’s needs are taken into account by governments across the UK in these challenging times. Autistic people have been included in mask exemptions and have been given more opportunities to exercise.

The Herefordshire Branch of the National Autistic Society is a volunteer-led branch that aims to provide support to individuals of all ages with autism, their immediate families and carers, as well as to professionals, and to campaign for improved awareness and better local services for those living with autism.
