Although this charter is described on this pamphlet as ‘Hereford’s First Charter’ This may not be strictly true since early Guide books describe this as the ‘second earliest charter’; Also Early documents refer to the ‘City of Hereford’ existing at dates before 1189 suggesting that there may have been earlier Royal Charters. Perhaps the City did have a copy of an earlier before a cleaner was discovered (in the early 1800s) wrapping up meat and goods with ancient documents from the vaults of the Town Hall.
