Members are elected for each of the seven wards that make up the City of Hereford.
Elections are held every four years in May unless a member resigns in which case a bye-election is held. All the members of the Council are elected, we have no members co-opted (that is appointed to fill a vacancy by their fellow councillors). Details of the current Councillors and the wards they represent can be found by clicking on the members link to the left.
Members appoint the Mayor, who is also the Chairman of the Council, annually. They also agree the annual budget and set the precept, which is the basis of the charge that is made to Council Tax payers in the City for the Parish Council. In addition, members make the major decisions about the Council’s priorities and work, monitor spending and the delivery of projects and determine the Council’s policies.
Officers are the Council’s staff, and details of who they are and a brief outline of their work can be found by clicking on the link to the left. Officers are employed on contracts of employment and work to specific job descriptions, which are also used to help fill vacancies when they arise. Officers work within the policies set by the Council and address the priorites and objectives agreed by members.
