For many years each Mayor of Hereford has nominated one or two charities to be the beneficiaries of their annual appeal. Mayors chose charities because of local connections or because of their own personal knowledge and interest in the work of the groups they wish to support. Some Mayors devote a large part of their time and effort to charity fund raising during their year and some have raised over £30,000. Others use the prestige of the mayoralty to support and raise awareness of an existing local appeal, rather than running a lot of new events of their own.
Beneficiaries in recent years have included the Little Princess Trust, The Haven and Robocap – breast and prostate cancer charities, St Michael’s Hospice, the local skate park in Holmer Road, the restoration of Venn’s Arch in Commercial Road, The ELY Memorial Fund, Wheeled 4 Sports Hereford, and Hereford Veterans Support Group.
The charities chosen by the current Mayor of Hereford, Councillor Sharon Michael, to support during her Mayoral year are the Blood Bikers and the Herefordshire branch of the National Autism Society.
Further information about these charities can be found below.
Mayors are able to give a tangible and lasting “thank you” to voluntary organisations for all the work they do in helping people with particular needs within the city by attending planned events by the groups they wish to support and organising some fund raising events of their own.
